Once upon a time while volunteering at a local Household Hazardous Waste Day event I asked a driver who had left his vehicle running, in a no-idle zone, “excuse me sir, would you please turn off your vehicle you are in a no-idle zone” (while he was chit-chatting with others nearby, it had been over a few reasonable minutes before I decided to pipe up).

He immediately proceeded to call me names “I bet you are a dirt worshiper & tree hugger” and while those descriptions may be accurate he forgot a few like “water conservationist, public lands advocate & nature lover” and by-the-way the driver was completely in the wrong but that’s OK because I bet now, even years later, he still remembers me & my request and perhaps is a bit more conscious of this simple eco-healthy request because I kept my cool, my face grew wide with a smile as I calmly stated, matter of fact, “regardless of my characteristic traits I still need you to either move your vehicle or simply turn it off”; begrudgingly he slipped back into his vehicle and left.

Looking back into my years on this earth, two before Earth Day was officially recognized, I can’t say with certainty when my passion for conservation, nature, land stewardship, wildlife protections and all the little things that make a big difference in a world started calling to me into action.

In the 11th grade, I expressed an interests to my high school guidance counselor about joining the Peace Corps; they assist partnering countries with locally prioritized projects in agriculture, education, health, promote world peace and friendship while fostering cultural exchange. He, my guidance counselor, didn’t hesitate in saying, and I quote, “you don’t have any skills to offer”.

Those words fell across my ears, as I let them soak in and not completely darken my dream.

Within me I felt I had the chutzpah, a drive to make a difference, even in those earlier years.

There were no words of encouragement offered on how I might get there, formulate a plan, he simply stated I should reconsider because I was ill-equipped.

As my timeline will show, I did. I walked out of his office not shattered but rather choosing a subject that was easy for me to dive further into.

It’s funny, fast-forwarding a couple of decades a coworker of mine had shared in her past work history, she had been a part of the peace corps and the skills she offered weren’t something that she knew before arriving, she was trained; the region she was in very much needed sanitation.

Toilets, washrooms, bathrooms, commodes but not what most of us are accustomed to utilizing for excrement & urination needs; it was to help a community build an area that was in essence contained pit toilets with an area to wash their hands to prevent the spread of disease.

I listened to her stories that transcended a couple of years thinking back to my expressed interest internally nodding “I could’ve done that, I could dig holes, I could dig trenches, I certainty could have aided a community in basic sanitation needs.”

The hard truth is that I allowed one persons beliefs to sway me, have a hand in shifting the shape of my future.

Perhaps it was fate or simply my destiny to never join the Peace Corps but if I’m honest I have been seizing opportunities to fully immerse myself in a path of giving over my growing years, joining events for a plethora of organizations & nonprofits investing selflessly to missions that I believe are for the benefit of our community.

The saying it takes a village is somewhat cliché, but honestly, it holds the truth.

I’m a girl who will say “No, I don’t any need help”, “I can do it on my own” or “No thanks, I’ve got it” but when it comes to others needing a hand, I oftentimes allow myself to overcommit wanting to be there to assist in any way I can, lending a caring hand.

In 2007, I was part of a steering committee that coordinated a rally in New Hampshire at our state capital for Bill McKibben’s Step-it-Up Climate Campaign to encourage Congress to adopt science-based legislation. I was pretty pumped and proud that day having a lineup of like minded speakers across local government, non-profits, elected officials and attendees in numbers that looked like the most recent No-Kings rally.
Ah, yes, there it is.

Politics and the environment.

They are entwined like that peanut butter & jelly sandwich I typically bring on a hike for my midday sustenance.

Unlike my sammi I consume eagerly I find myself, at times, being a bit tender footed when it comes to swallowing current politics.

Actually, that’s a lie, of sorts, the at times part of it, because I am very passionate about protecting & preserving our public lands and waterways.

Before my career in Financial Data Management I was a self-proclaimed guru in the Cost Accounting arena having easily navigated that topic in collage I decided to pursue that path; it treated me well professionally.

I bet you wouldn’t have guessed that before that I was actually a Poly-Sci Major.

Yup, a degree in Political Science was where I was initially headed but alas the draw into numbers and manufacturing won my focus but I still chose to dabble in the social science of politics and eventually became a full fledged citizen scientist.

That didn’t happen overnight, it was an evolution over many years and no degree is required you invest yourself in a topic of interest and learn by reading, being engaged, actively listening, adapting approaches to problems with unique solutions, dig deep and continually seek information that’s updated arming yourself with science-based knowledge.

Honestly, as the internet became more powerful so did my quest and engagement opportunities along with making the conscious decision what business to work for was paramount.

Interesting fact, while I was seeking employment in the early 2000’s I’d received two near identical offers by two very different manufacturing companies.

The choice was simple, to change the world one spoonful of yogurt at a time versus changing lives through chemicals.

I was stoked to join the family at Yogurt Works where the foundation of Stonyfield Organic Yogurt was built on the mission to change the world—specifically by focusing on “healthy food, healthy people, healthy planet, and healthy business”. My role was primarily about the numbers but while there I was able to do so much more alongside others in environmental politics and volunteerism engagement.

We, at Stonyfield, had a saying that was about being MAD, which was to Make a Difference; as employees we were given paid time off to volunteer for nonprofits; I loved that facet of my job.

During those years, I was also an elected official in local town government, held a host of roles for charities & nonprofits, volunteered for as many if not more organizations and school events, master of healthy snacks galore and even coached a bit for drama.

You’ll find with me, I won’t regurgitate nor lecture about how I feel, my beliefs, rather I’ll gently immerse my hopes that you will at least have an open mind, listen and maybe consider changing a few habits or perhaps join me in lending a helping hand.

I’ve never understood why some people behave as they do, continually take, take, take thinking there will be no dramatic repercussion.

Today, I will state it plainly, our planet is under attack from the inside.

A villain not of the masked kind but one that creeps around corners and hides in darkened rooms cutting deals that are stealing and threatening our public lands, waterways, animals and eco-systems.

Ironically, a gal whose career was all about data is not a fan of data centers or AI and all of the resources required, primarily water that goes into using not our brains but chatGBT and artificial Intelligence I’m simply not trusting of.

As our season on the road winds down I’d be remised if I didn’t share a few observations along our routes the past six months.

In Washington, Utah, Idaho, Montana, and Colorado we witnessed snow pack that was MIA; don’t you “I’m not a fan of winter anyway” folks dare snicker because this is actually a tragic situation that has extreme far reaching consequences.

Literally, during the same time-frame these mountain ranges were capped with snow blanketed deep into the valleys below are bare; virtually naked of the life sustaining white stuff.

Feet, not inches, of what is truly needed for a water resource simply isn’t there.

States have already issued drought declarations for watersheds due to low snowpack and multiple years of precipitation deficits; I’d strongly suggest folks start conserving now because it’s only going to get worse as it dries up, predictions are high, the likelihood of a strong El Niño developing by summer and lasting into 2027.

Meaning, forecasts of significant warming in the Pacific, potentially reaching “Super El Niño” status.

What’s ironic is that many regions are being hit hard with a deluge of atmospheric rain causing floods and destruction.

Dare I state that this is sadly becoming our new normal?! One region coping with natural disasters with a government that threatens no support unless they bend a certain knee or make concessions while they deny, deny, deny the truth and strip environmental protections.

Climate change is real people!

We have been warned and while some routinely deny the existence of science based facts others (like me) not only believe the inconvenient truth but live our daily lives respecting the Earth and Mother Nature’s resources.

The plight of the Colorado River I’ve witnessed firsthand and water is life; literally!

We lived for a decade in the Valley of the Sun (Arizona) and while visiting the southwest the past four winters we’ve stood looking at the horrific water levels of both Lake Mead & Lake Powell as it’s receded hundreds of feet leaving docks & boat launches completely dry.

Water levels are not inches but in multiples of feet lower than ever before; it’s a dramatic statistic that has received press and is receiving intense political pressure while states argue over water rights.

A few writings back a theme developed as my thoughts spilled onto the page. I came to realize that season of overlanding all had a common denominator ~ WATER!

Yup, simplified into each of its drops is always a draw to serenity as we would find a place to stop and boondocks.

Water ... seeking for serenity, seeking water to fish, seeking for hydration, seeking water to cook, seeking to clean, seeking water to bath, the land is thirsty and seeks water; if only my tears weren’t of salt for I’ll willingly shed to refill a watershed.

Life Sustaining Water!!

I’m not trained formally in climate science, but I am a citizen scientist who believes in science based facts; our Earth is under attack.

I use this word attack once before above because it’s difficult describing using softer words the intense visuals I’ve seen through my own eyes standing on the edge of a lake, river, stream and on a screen from around the globe.

Climate change, global warming; Mother Nature’s pissed her storms of destruction for which we have virtually no protection.

Deniers of climate change have certainly felt the wrath of their blindness but do they state that they were wrong after all of their belongings are swept away, a wildfire ravages neighborhoods or droughts threaten life and livelihoods?

Their unwillingness to admit is surreal with stakes that are higher than ever before.

If anything, the financial implications are real with insurance companies raising rates to underwrite claims due to flood, fire & hurricanes; all of us are paying that price, even me whose chosen to live a life of small imprint, my rates just went up.

Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires - especially now with the dramatic wide=spread budgetary cuts that are being propagated against the Forest Service

When I feel the earth beneath my feet my breath softens and as I standing under a tree my inner harmony increases.

As my hands touch the mossy ground I recognize the earth’s offer of peace.

A puzzle I am still invested in solving

I’ve aided in the restoration of habitat for the endangered New England Cottontail, spent copious hours afloat near loons hoping they’ll show me some leg so I can snap an image of their bands for database tracking, I’ve raked deer poop by the shovelful & cleaned mucky muck in the form of wet leaf debris from a bear enclosure to allow for free water flow facilitating the reopening of a science center, beach cleanups by the ocean waves were blustery fun, lake monitoring and invasive vegetation identification, fought to eliminate processed foods and food colorings, letter writing campaigns for land and water protection, serving on an active board of directors and as a trustee, conserving with others in a non-intrusive manner on topics they’ve asked “why are you so passionate about this?!

Be Good to the Planet Even When No One is Watching!

Part of my answer is “it’s not about me rather it’s about you”.

Yup, you and you didn’t even known the causes I fought/fight for were/are to benefit of all of us!

Using my unique voice to advocate for the places I find beautiful, of historical significance, keeping wildlife habitat pristine & unfragmented, cherishing serenity in the absence of man’s harsh ways of stripping & pilfering the lands or leaving residual waste defacing nature’s grace is a calling I’ll always answer.

Mid-terms elections are up next and my passion for the natural world, wildlife, public lands & waterways, and human rights are all on the ballot and we shall not remain quiet.

This picture was from an event I volunteered at prior to the 2020 elections that a host of hopeful candidates spoke on an array of climate related subjects to crowd of enthusiastic listeners; I am hopeful that Pete will consider running in this next round of presidential elections.

Being a steward of the land isn’t always simple, conscious choices are made. I’ll advocate for areas like the pristine Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) from nearby mining pollution, saying Hell No to Pebble Mine, keeping Public Lands in Public Hands, Follow the Frog Rainforest Alliance and a litany of others that focus on preservation and protection because we absolutely need it!

Candidates need to know that they are being held accountable for their votes on bills that support (or do not) protections of the Earth, our environment, human rights and not to sell of our Public Lands & Waterways for profit.

Make Earth Cool Again

Barefoot without hesitation my steps are heightened as I stand on the edge looking across the horizon.

I’ve looked into mines laced with tailings at giant with earthmovers that appear as small as matchbox cars erasing mountaintops in the name of progress, the hand of man continually raping the land.

Money isn’t something that I have had luxury to easily dispose of, to toss about freely or willy-nilly; it’s something that I methodically plan the spending of.

Living within my means is something I’ve always aspired, making a charitable donation instead of spending frivolously on an item I didn’t really need.

A legacy left behind, but isn’t that what it is, what we leave behind in our memory in our care; this land isn’t ours, we’re just temporary visitors on this tour.

This land isn’t mine, this land isn’t yours but borrowed from future generations.

And when I say land that encompasses everything on it, water, plants, wildlife, landscape all of it belongs to We the People and don’t you ever forget it!

Ask yourself have I done enough?

Should I have done more?

Should I have consumed less?

Is less truly more?

For the Love of the World by Charlotte Tall Mountain

Money for which I never had an abundance of so instead a giving of my time made a lot more sense.

In this gals Last Will and Testament I’ve left explicit instructions to donate a portion of my retirement savings that’s left to a few charitable organizations; sorry cherished non-profits but you’ll have to hold on until my dying day.

The reality of it is that I know I’m not a saving grace or Hail Mary for our planet but I also know that efforts like my own can compound into something beautiful, helping carving a path forward that isn’t filled with despair and destruction.

When I’m hiking I’ve got a kally-ism “leave no trace but that smile across your face”.

In the end, my end, I don’t want my time on earth to be witnessed as a burden rather a blessing as my ashes are carried off by a higher summit mountain updraft into the wind never to be seen again.

Transitioning my thoughts away from that day I yet to know and speaking of intense winds one of my favorite volunteer gigs is for the Mount Washington Observatory (MWOBS) as a week long live-in staying at the summit of Mt. Washington cooking, cleaning, greeting, entertaining and soaking in climate science as it is shared by their knowledgeable staff while they witness some of the most extreme weather on the planet.

This is a week long endeavor that is not for the lazy nor undriven, it requires you to be at your peak of giving as you work/volunteer sometimes more than a 10 hour day.

I believe those weeks were also filled with moments of pure joy as you have the opportunity to endure hurricane force winds one day and the absolute stillness under crisp skies dawning the Milky Way on a summit of 6,288 feet.

An added bonus, if you are lucky, is to witness a Broken Spectre of the famous Obs Tower while you are standing in blustery sunny wet foggy conditions that are puuurect for weather wondering.

Oh and double bonus was having Nimbus hang with you outside the Obs door as we watch the sun set casting a golden hue across the northern presidential range.

If you are still reading along, by now, you must be feeling my feels of how awesome it is to be a tiny integral part of nature or maybe you still don’t get the allure and that’s a-ok because you can always assist my fight of the good fight by being generous with a charitable donation to causes I deeply believe in.

Yup, I’m on my way back to New Hampshire after almost six months away and I am very much looking forward to hitting some of my favorite trails with my tramily as I strive to remind folks of being a responsible outdoor recreationist and of the tools we have available to help us make well informed decisions as we plan that next adventure immersed nature.

The universe had spoken the day I was born for my soul only feels refueled when I’ve given of me the most.

One person can’t reshape but can they!?

One person interactions adjusting a timeline, one persons choices ripples in abundance, one persons willingness to give when they don’t have, one persons voice makes a difference, one persons presence is a gift to behold, one persons angst is another’s relief, one person can create a tsunami of hope.

My hope is that during this Earth Month you recognize Mother Nature and shower her with nurture; it’s not a day that I celebrate on April 22nd … well actually I celebrate a person … my sista’ has the coolest of birthday’s for on Earth Day she was born.

I’m a gal who loves to chase sunrises & sunsets, stare at the stars, seeking northern lights is more than an obsession in darkened skies, floating in the stillness as fog lifts as the day awakes and welcoming an embrace of family & friends I’ve not hugged in a while.

The world can be chaotic but with due diligence it can also be serene.

My query to each of you, not just a reader of my ramblings but as a body that’s inhabiting the only plant we know if clean air, clean water and a healthy planet is important to you?

Seriously, the generations that come next shouldn’t be left with a mess created because of laziness, gluttony and cowardice.

Using your voice and a bit of energy you can stop projects that threaten our planet and stop wake up for those that offer protections.

You’ve heard it before, it’s all connected, we are all connected, ecosystems that thrive or die depend on us, extinction is forever and wouldn’t that be something if We the People let it happen.

Silence isn’t an action but by virtue a statement in of itself.

I guess really all I have to say can be boiled down into a few short words rather than all of them above is this … Respect your Mother, Earth that is and be sure to Take Action supporting a cause you believe in because every voice matters.

Make an Earth Pledge ~ an allegiance to the mountains, rivers, soil, and sky.

Waves pull across pebble beaches as the moon does her nightly jig.

Thunder looms quietly in the distance as the scent of rain comes crashing in.

Rivers eddy while her banks are tattered and torn by events upriver she’s never known.

Snow offers flakes that quench our existence but our actions have melted their chance at creating life sustaining snowpack.

Fields feel barren of crops that feed our existence as humans debate water rights.

Trees standing longer than most Homo erectus have been on the Earth are timbered in the name of progress.

Rooted in Nature is a story of our past & future untold.

Fog hides away sins of man yet only momentarily for her lift unveils misery of man’s hand.

Flowers bloom in Spring as a reminder of the beautiful landscape in our care.

Summer splashes gleefully until Cyanobacteria blooms & E-coli close beaches throwing sand on our play date.

Autumn acts as a reminder that all isn’t lost if we heed inconvenient warnings.

Winter of that Old Man is becoming something of a myth, a legend, stories of “when I was a kid we had soooo much snow!”

Climate Change is entangled in our daily lives whether you live in skyscrapers or the natural world.

The terrain you choose can align with your current state as you navigate

Think of the time spent outdoors a pathway to healing

One might think that anxiety & higher elevations don't go together but actually they are complimentary

Feeling burned out or stressed take to scrags & scrambles

Grief ... that's a tough one, perhaps softness of a meadow

Choosing your adventure deliberately is what we call mountain therapy

Full disclosure, I'm not formally trained in this arena but I've tested theories others have studied

Whatever burden you carry nature has a solution leaving you feeling more grounded

Your senses & nervous system are taken over with your bodily demands on a hike, targeting intentional engagement with the natural environment

Coping with trauma can be debilitating, after a loss I found myself deep within winter's grasp hiking a 4,000 footer deep within the White Mountain Forest of New Hampshire with a couple of friends. I didn't allow myself to cry on that hike simply because my tears would have frozen but within my body I ached.

The hike was intense & I found myself lost within thought as I arrived at the trailhead. It was after our first summit that I finally felt lighter, my body taking on the challenge diverting to where it was needed

When you feel as if your mind is spinning direct your attention to purposeful activities

When engaged your breath becomes intentional with enhanced CO₂ & purposefully resetting your breath & muscles engaged accelerates cortisol (which helps manage stress, sleep-wake cycles, body temperature, metabolism & blood sugar)

Sustained effort engages motor-planning areas in the prefrontal cortex (the part of our brain that affects behavior, personality, and ability to plan), competing for cognitive bandwidth against intrusive allowing ruminative thoughts

Using the tools when hiking, my map & compass, poles & foot placement, when trails intersect & weather threatens to change my mind is forced to refocus

Oftentimes, reaching that summit & taking a rest the quiet while nibbling on snacks you can almost feel the prefrontal cortex activating. A quieter internal landscape forms where emotions may emerge as you gaze across the landscape

Lots of little decisions in the backcountry help me reset so I can focus on the most important information when I get back home.

The choices we make, their paths created for safety, movement enhances our mental agility

Having water nearby a trail offers a rhythmic sense of peace that distinguishes burnout. You are fully engaged in nature, whether passive or active as features send a wave that'll improve moods & fatigue

Sometimes, a walk is just a walk, a familiar terrain that quickly reduce mental burden allowing for emotions to dissipate

Life can be chaotic, overstimulating, frustrating, so in nature's abode enjoy windswept views, the sound of your own footsteps on the trail, quiet moments as the sun awakens or an undercast shares a canvas anew

Nature is to be protected as much as our own mental health, healing isn't only within our head but can transform underfoot

Go for a hike or walk but do it with intention, integrate your path with your body, soul, mind & natural landscape you choose

Invest in your mental & emotional health, the next time you feel the proverbial weight of the world is too much to handle, take my advice & head into the wilderness & unlock nature's power of healing

Ode to Mr. 6,288 (by me, Kal)

Words I love to write, almost as much as this gal loves to hike, I crafted my “Ode to 6,288” that I hope you enjoy; here it goes:

Highest recorded wind gusts of 231 MPH & coldest wind chill a mere minus 109 degrees.

A pile of rocks, harshness you emit, not fable, urban legend or folk lore.

Visitors arrive galore via foot paths, your twisted roadway or even rail.

No matter the vessel it’s a challenging assent upwards as we scramble, ride or climb.

Met with bluebird skies or snowflakes, sideways rain or “just” gusty winds, rime ice is beautiful but make haste & heed warnings.

In awe of your epic views clear days display, layers of mountainous terrain whilst others remain socked in, sleet & treacherous weather that completely ruin a day.

Higher-summit forecast, a reality sets in, perhaps we should turn back, not go further for danger is ahead & trail-gate instead.

This destination, an epic journey, peeps in line wanting pictures at the top.

Sweeping across the White Mountain National Forest I proclaim this gal is in fact joining “Seek the Peak” yet again this year.

Tuckerman Ravine for charity the winds howl my name.

Irresistible, rugged & strong. Yet your alpine zone remains fragile to even that one footstep that didn’t belong.

Shhh … I’ve got a secret. Nimbus, the kitty of the MWOBS is the real reason I’m returning.

Purrhaps he’ll allow a scratch behind his ear?

No doubt, if I were to lay down my snuggly Minus33 gear Nimbus would climb onto it & making of biscuits would quickly commence, his eyes slowly closing as a kitty nap would commence.

I hate to feel utter contempt for another human but it’s a sneaky feeling I can’t always shake amidst our state of chaos.

A few days back we traveled across the Navajo Bridge, stopping for a time as we gazed upon our beloved Colorado River. Lovingly, I recalled those days when I was self-sequestered, no connectivity to the outside noise.

I welcomed back memories, reflected on the time that’s past, as a rapid of emotions cascaded into my heart.

I’m trying desperately to encourage, to remain resolute, to stay positive & let’s not forget RESIST.

We can’t not be engaged. We can’t not look away. We can’t not speak out peace. We can’t not try to stop the onslaught onto everything pure.

Immersing myself continually in nature is my escape. I find solace within her grasp and am saddened she’s under attack once again.

There are so many people I know that have buyers regret even though they were all warned. Blinded by what I still can’t fully comprehend what went askew in their brains.

There is right & wrong in the world.

There is good & evil in the world.

I’ve outwardly shared my view on others who are bad for our environment, economy or overall well-being or that they are just simply wrong, so very wrong even though they’ll not be swayed. Maybe I'd even go so far as to label them as evil but are they simply limited without a friggin' clue?!

In truth, what I've deemed, in my own opinion, that their level of consciousness is what limits them. Their behavior, to me, is nauseating, incapable of consideration of others, their awareness is severely compromised and they lack complex understanding is missing.

When I immerse myself in Mother Nature I bring essentials, like my trusty compass.

I should let folks borrow it, of course only after teaching them how to properly use it, because I think they are lost.

The rule when you're lost is to stop and refocus on your surroundings, the terrain, the sun or moon illuminating the way.

A shift in those lost souls, their perspective, removing small-minded limitations, might just allow for a level of peace, compassion, grace and open-mindedness that they are desperately needing.

I realize that life can be cruel at times, we can be cruel, I may even fall from grace as I allow myself to react to situations unsavory when I know better and should be emulating more kindness into the universe.

I know better, not all responses to what we face should be met with equal harness or any for that matter.

What is the matter with that phrase coexist? It’s gotta be better for us collectively wouldn’t ya’ say?!

Chains of hatred are broken by resisting that knee jerk reaction to those jerks out there provoking, constantly poking the bear, wanting to see us falter so they can pounce and point out that I'm "just as bad" when I have a momentary faultier.

What we say or do is a direct reflection of who we are, to the very core, this I truly believe.

Thoughts become words that form action.

Actions become habits.

Habits become what we see as our own character and how others perceive us.

Is that character I see shadows forming in front of me my destiny?

Do not allow the fate of your thoughts to root darkness.

There have been times when I've said "easy peasy lemon squeeze" when actually it was more like stressy, depressy, lemon are you freakin' kidding me zesty testing me from the inside of my core.

I feel our journey through this timeline is analogous to an over crowded jam-packed bumper to bumper road rage filled paved highway when I’d much rather be on a less traveled scenic byway gazing across nature's landscape but sadly thoughts of those who want to rape our lands slam back into the reality so I hop back on board the #RESIST path again.

Reflecting, I consciously choose to momentarily leave this situation, not allowing the news, memes, articles, videos, comments that are without fact be spread like disease to enter my peripheral for a tiny bit.

I also know being resilient & vigilant against this reign is of utter importance so it’s more of a rest stop, a mindful meditation I find myself partaking every now and then.

I’m not blinded by false hope, I acknowledge that we won’t win all of our battles. However, like that left turn we should've made back in November we would have avoided this scorched landscape.

I can accept that things go wrong, not our way, at times when life is cruel and fuuuugly, when there was no ill-fated maliciousness but simply a temporary setback that kicks you in the gut but this… it’s a persistent parasite on all of us.

The ride though life is filled with choices, forgiveness but don't forget, that memory a lesson taught but don't let it ultimately taint our paths forward.

In hardships that we’ve overcome, those tests are what create endurance and drives us to live a better life but hardship shouldn't last forever darkening one’s soul, never to smile sweetly again, laugh joyfully but for now I feel salty drops fall.

I know by staying focused that we, collectively, all can make a positive impact amidst all of this.

Behaviors are learned at an early age but along the way we're bombarded with views from the world around us. What we choose to emulate is exactly that; don't drink the Red40, not even a tiny tainted sip, it’s tainted with hate.

BTW have any of you seen the movie The Brainwashing? It's worth a disturbing watch of what we already know to be true:

Jen Senko, a documentary filmmaker, looks at the rise of right-wing media through the lens of her WWII vet father who changed from a life-long, nonpolitical Democrat to an angry, right-wing fanatic after his discovery of talk radio on a lengthened commute to work.

Through my years, I feel like I've been seeking something but I'm fairly certain I've not yet found it but it must be encapsulated within inner peace.

Recently, driving along the Southwest landscape that is filled with sage I hear those terrible words “burn baby burn” and all I want to do is start smudging away negative energy and purifying the earth.

There are a lot of folks who would laugh at that, they can, enjoy your chuckle while I breath deeply and exhale your misdirection. I see your smoke & mirror, we’re on to your jig, we are laser focused on what is at stake.

When our acts are intentional, like carving out time each day to relax, reset, recharge, rebalance you’ll find yourself, like I often do, back within a cycle of harmony.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone could align actions of a higher principle that benefits all, not just a chosen few?

In the whole scheme of things I’m just someone who’s driven to be good, do good, leave a legacy that might be worthy someday.

We don't need praise for the good we do, I don’t, but I want to make some type of positive impact along the way.

What’s the world coming to when the name that shall not be spoken in the White House blatantly lies ALL THE TIME and folks nod their head and say “oh yeah” … blind sheep stuck in destructive behavior under a false pretense of good.

Are you serious, seriously, are you kidding me, WTF … reactions as news emits across the airwaves of yet another blasphemy act shoved upon us.

I’ve been reading, listening, thinking, always thinking it seems about this conundrum.

Whenever it rains and those drops splat on pavement cracks, an overly fertilized lawn, interstates & dirt roadways, scantily landscaped pollinator friendly yard or mountain meadows do they linger or rather find their way to soak into the earthen ground?

Yeah, sometimes they create a raging force that can’t be held back for climate change and Mother Nature are real & really pissed off but in the wake of that traces of love appear.

Those gentler rain events offer blooming flowers, sweet fragrances, and worms for fishing. A flood is divesting, indiscriminate in its destructive rage. Both ultimately join folks, band together, but under very different circumstances.

I want to aid those who’ve lost everything and to dance in that gentle rain once again with bare feet again, carefree and happy uninhibited by the news for just a few moments each day without the threat of massive destuction.

My footprints won’t be left behind as the air dries, erasing my steps but hopefully traces like an imprint on someone else’s life or their heart will do as I try to bring positivity, hope and resiliency forward each day.

It takes courage, passion, and ambition for the deeper greater good.

Some might perceive my kindness as a weakness but I’d like to think it’s a strength well cultivated.

This gal is a lover of all things in the natural world. Of course, I love animals big, small, fierce and furry. I've always had a cat, my lifestyle is better suited for providing their care; just ask STELLA as she naps next to me while we travel the country.

Speaking of cats there's a great analogy that hoomans should puurhaps not only read but consider a type of mediation that's puurfect.

When cats climb trees they don't all get stuck as they seek that higher ground, watching from above for a spell.

When a cat does happen to fall from a tree or out a window they simply let go.

A cat becomes relaxed, flips facing the ground and lands on all fours; some landings are definitely much more graceful but the point is they face what scares them.

Imagine being a cat and deciding nope, I don't want to go.

That's when they get stuck and potentially fall without grace because they became rigid, inflexible and tense, no longer allowing what makes sense to filter in.

Humans are the same, minus the fur.

In our lives, each moment is a result of being on our own precipice but within each of us we have the ability to stop that fall, to prevent chronic tension, to no longer cling onto what impairs us but to let go and soar as we choose to live amongst kindness as we do good work and live in harmony.

We are living during a time that has fear mongering as an ever present theme but why?

Why can't it be the other way?

If we reflect back on history there is are harsh reminders of an ugly past. That past is also laced with beauty and filled with uplifting energy that we should harness and manifest back into our current state.

Shining bright during the darkness is a much better way; that’s when we see a sky filled stars!

We need to be optimistic against the angst; I too need to be reminded to remember this.

Like the current season, when all of the leaves of deciduous trees are gone yet we know that the process has already begun, that they will bring back the lushness of buds after dormancy; they survive and I know we will too (though my retirement funds, ewf! I don’t want to look!).

However, unlike trees that conserve energy storing it away for spring, we must dig deep pulling from those roots our chutzpah, this gal is full of it, and while we need to rest and reflect we must also not allow the darkness to overshadow and poison our leaves.

"Leaving no trace" is a motto used broadly across those who immerse themselves in nature.

With this climate I realize it’s difficult to embody the courage to speak freely, speak of values that are innate of our collective human race.

We must choose, yes choose, to nurture with inspirational intentions not filled with that ugly word hate.

I've got a kally-eque saying that is simple but oh so true.

Hate is a four letter word but so is love and hope.

Which would you rather choose … I know the correct answer so it’s purely rhetorical.

Humans are not vessels that are meant to be burdened with negative energy. It'll rot one to the core from the inside.

We must reclaim the joy, let go of that negativity that separates and re-trust in humanity albeit I’m a bit weary of those false promises, those who’ve been scornful and seek to destroy freedoms.

If you find yourself slipping, like me, into darkness, let it be only momentarily.

It happens to all of us there is no denying that fact however staying swallowed up into that abyss will only destroy your soul.

I'll offer freely to be a glimmer of light, a glimmer of hope, a compass back, a hand when you need it, arms to hold you and my ears to listen as we navigate this path together.

But if you choose to travel alone, know that my good friend Mother Nature is always there.

She's been a true friend of mine over the years, her innate ability to provide solace when I desperately needed it, a refreshing dip to re-baptize my soul, a mountain trail to challenge not only my body but my mind as I let it wander without a map. I know that in nature I’ll always find its way to clarity. I welcome the trace Mother Nature leaves on me each time I visit.

Within each of us is magic.

Yup, I bet you didn't know that. It's kindness, a gentle helpful touch, a moment sitting and listening intently, being present, an open mind that produces opportunity for all, a fierceness that only comes from love.

This gal considers herself lucky to have spent time deep within the historic canyon on the Colorado River, it was a beautiful gift I’ll cherish for the rest of my lifeline. These memories will never fade for they are tucked deep within my heart, always to be saved!

By remembering to gaze outward, not only down into the deep, we are rewarded with a horizon of choices each of their own unique consequence.

Like tinted glass the sea hides her keep, a Cutlassfish is a truly unique catch I refer to as a “sea snake” as its length was nearly four feet and its fins almost fully transparent as it cut through the jellyfish filled waters, creating its own wake, at first I thought it was an eel but that was my mistake.

From time to time you’ll have a seat while spending hours upon hours in the open sea, no I’m not being lazy, fishing is a lot of work. Bracing yourself constantly for that nibble or rip of line as a fish of any shape or size might take a bit of your bait. Holding onto the gear isn’t an option for me, to grasp firmly in anticipation of the call from the depths.

However, that Gulf Grouper I caught and is resting on ice is traditionally a lazy species. It emerges from the rocky bottom during slack tide looking for eats; with live bait I’d sent down the oh so fun to catch and alluring Spotted Bay Bass.

Knowing your species is critical when you’re reeling & having a chart handy will keep you legal as the White Sea Bass closely resembles the Totoaba that’s been listed as an endangered species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act since 1979.

Then there’s the Scorpion Fish you seriously don’t want to touch but fudge I need a bit o’ help getting it off my hook!

You’ll come to always guess correctly when you’ve got Trigger Fish on the line; it’s human-like teeth look so funny while it’s little fins wiggle waggle while it seemingly smiles at you.

California Halibut is an interesting hook-set that keeps you in suspense wondering what the heck until you see its large flatness emerge from the darkness into the turquoise saltiness.

The diving birds give away where Yellowtail exist along with dolphins that snack on bait balls; it’s a complete guess what might be lurking under those tasty nibbles.

It’s always a treat to meet a new species of fish, the Croaker dawning stripes that is rumored to be sweet flesh.

Sharks are around, this gal having hooked into easily a 10’ Mako our last trip but alas this visit only gave tiny Barracuda’s that are lined with sharp teeth; better to chomp on you with.

In the vast ocean I look into her depths, near the surface, only a few layers deep I see a variety of jellyfish but I don’t know their names, a string of pearls maybe is one, another round in shape and those more oblong; I do know this, I dare not reach over the edge and haphazardly give my hands a rinse.

I’m careful of big & small jellyfish, they are everywhere, one’s head large enough it bobs like a beach ball as I hope the Tortuga we saw might swim over and enjoy a snack.

This trip, a whale of a good time, we shared sunrises that illuminated the winds, would they be in our favor each day.

In the distance we saw spray that could only be from humpbacks as they swam racing to the surface, a breach of the invisible plane, their size immense miles and miles away my smile giant as I watched them disappear back into the depths.

The sea was mostly gentle, her beauty seemingly flat but filled with exuberance or was it me?

Chasing dreams I watch the horizon as my mind drifts freely, with purpose there are easily over 100 porpoises speeding, gliding, diving, chasing alongside me.

I’m a bit queasy as we head not back to shore but rather as we pack up and head towards the border.

Being here, among locals whose kindness goes beyond words, I’m filled with dread and embarrassment but I shall fight like I’ve got a Gulf Grouper on my 80 pound line and always #RESIST Red 40 & his criminal cronies BS; we shall persist! #RESIST

It was dreamy to not be connected for a spell knowing damn well that they’re working to remove our freedoms, taking away our rights, abandoning those who faltered mistaking rhetoric, there is no a care for you, you were warned but you didn’t listen only hearing false claims of a profit cloaked in a disguise but he’s only brought shame.

It’s a downer I know, these thoughts ensnared in my fishing tale. Unlike dropping my 16 ounce weight loaded up with bait hoping for the prize, to catch the big one or a new species, that’s all fun and filled with days that I can forget he’s out there wreaking havoc across the lands.

Our story hasn’t ended, although it’s trying to repeat, that hand unwilling to touch the bible, yet another tell, how many more do you need; the enemy is within.

With nothing to lose I cast my rays of love, each of us deserves, well maybe not some because they are filled with hate for humanity, races they’ll easily dispose of thinking they’re the top of the food chain.

You’re not, don’t make any more mistakes, speak up & against the regime. Like resisting the temptation to reel early, before a good hook-set, stay vigilant. #RESIST

Here, across the border, we broke bread with new friends from both Canada and Mexico, each sharing vittles to nibble along with stories, the horror, us all wondering WTF is the allure.

I’m not a bleeding heart, let’s be perfectly clear, a heart of gold filled with hope, true to the humane cause; I absolutely stand with Ukraine.

The Bible Red 40 wouldn’t place a hand upon, like salt it’d rot into his dark soul, thou not be any shape of Christian, cast away doubts he’s made alliance with the devil, in his name all actions are aimed.

This gal is not a God fearing creature, my soul is pure. Truth is my allegiance is towards Mother of all in Nature I put my faith. Nature is my muse, for without her grace we all lose.

As a fresh fish fillet lays across my plate overflowing with goodness as we share and discuss, not debate, there’s no room for floundering our lives, our planet, our ecosystem, our humanity is at stake.

With my mindful meanderings I recall time afloat on boats, speeding to a secret fishing spot with my eyes wide open & my heart welcoming this adventure flanked by Blue-footed Booby’s, Seagulls in an array of colors, Grebes, Pelicans and those dozen or so overwintering Loons I love so.

Arriving back on shore, the border wall awaits our crossing, my conscience is clear, full of wishful thinking, will you stop being sheep.

Now that’s a species we didn’t catch on our trip, Sheepshead Fish, ironically enough they’re also known as Convict Fish.

Oh well, I’ll just leave y’all with this 𝖂𝖊 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝕻𝖊𝖔𝖕𝖑𝖊 and all of the critters from the Gulf of Mexico to the Sea of Cortez …

… it all intersects, you can’t escape it, you can’t predict it, you can’t hide from it … from the swells of this gal fishing tale, here you have it, 100% truth, we can RESIST❣️

The depths of the ocean we know as the Sea of Cortez, Baja California’s coastline had called to this gals adventurous soul.

For nearly 30 years my husband, Eric, had been fishing these waters whilst I stayed away but this trip I hopped on board and travel with him & our buddy Dan down those long, windy, skinny, remote, beautiful roads surround by mountains that had me day dreaming of my backpack & hiking boots (of which neither were on this trip).

It was the vast ocean who was serenading me on this trek.

Stories they’ve shared from over the years, not like my own, but to now be with them & create memories of what was ahead were quickly unfolding.

Hours of driving, now into day two as we broke up the trek with an overnight stay at simply adorable spot that had glass hearts hanging from the trees & gattos guarding the grounds.

As we rolled up on a sanctuary, our place to deep into B.C., utterly remote, my soul was completely at rest as my senses took in absence of more gladly welcoming less.

The warmth of the sand as the gentle waves licked my toes I was greeted by scenery virtually untouched by humans for miles & miles that stretched.

Sandbars exposed allowed for leisurely strolls late afternoon whilst evenings displayed an epic array of stars as the sky came awake, each planet showing off among beautifully lite constellations; the absence of manmade light a pure delight!

Early mornings had us chasing the sunrise as we headed for open waters I’ve never explored.  To a waypoint that’ll remain secret our captain was taking us with the hopeful promise of fish.

Generations of fisherman that date back to “The Duke” is the legend we were told have chartered these waters, I felt like I was among royalty of the sea.

The weather forecast, for which I’m addicted, called for calm winds that my fellow veteran anglers of this area quickly called 🐂 💩.

It wasn’t wrong in those early morning hours but by mid-day our panga was a rock n’ & a roll n’; the full experience was underfoot in a boat small for the ocean space we were in.

Sea legs I seem to be born because I navigated that sway like a champ but I’ll admit I wasn’t a wee bit disappointed when we headed closer to shore to escape the swells that were like an great rollercoaster gaining strength by the westerly winds … weeeee!

Day 1: I was on the board but it was relatively quiet in this gals FISHON cheer but I eagerly exchanged my rod & reel for the camera as I tried to capture images my eyes might never see again.

A younger whale made a noisy blowhole appearance a short distance off our bow. With a few breaches & a partial tail display that was a delight to witness we continued our course, in the opposite direction.

Day 2: I’d start each drop, that’s what you call it when you send your bait, hook & weight down into the depths, by asking our captain “how deep” my disbelief the line actually went down that far with any to spare.

Seeing his screen I knew this to be true so slowly down & down & down further until I hit rock bottom.  A place no one ever wants to stay for fear of getting stuck!

That telling bounce then a few reels up is where my bait met their fate.

The first fish I reeled from the depths was no slouch & oh so tasty will it be filleted and seasoned on my plate.

The next fish was one I kept annoyingly saying with a giant grin “I reeled a Grouper from 500 feet”!!

Seriously, that hook-set was nothing like I’ve ever experienced before.   I knew it was big and I knew it wasn’t a Bay Bass by the way it was reacting.  Hopeful for a fish I’ve never caught before AND of a size that fishing stories FishingwithKal are made from.

BUT not getting rocked, not breaking off, not letting any slack in the line, not being a wimpy girl, not quitting, no seat to buckle me in just pure grit me against fish!

I’m not going to loose this fish!

Eric reeled in his line to be my coach offering helpful tips & reminded me to breathe and that this is why we stay in shape (cuz if I wasn’t there’s absolutely no friggin’ way I’d be able to reel in my fish from that depth successfully).

Heading in after a full marathon trip we had a leisurely evening that found us staring once again up at the brilliant stars.

Day 3: We headed into the bay to catch bait & were greeted by the sounds of several wintering over loons!  Yup, LOONS! That undeniable sound & wing-stretch had my heart souring as seven of these critters grouped up in the protected bay; I loved this placed even more.

Loaded for bear we headed out once again to another magical spot where I wished I could see her underbelly, the ocean’s contour, where she hides her keep.

Bouncing the bottom, a nibble & slurp FISHON begins that loooong process of reeling from the depths no less than 460 feet!

Flat was the surface of the Sea of Cortez, little breeze, the forecast for the win or was it me for being able to spend time in such a beautiful place, nature’s bliss❣️

Kissed by the salty air, a touch of sun, copious amounts of fresh fish that’ll feed us for days on end.

Our last morning we woke rather early but in no hurry.

With no boat to catch I grabbed our blanket & took Eric’s hand for those lounge chairs on the beach beckoned us to watch the day unfold while we stayed still.

Wrapped in a blanket, all snuggled into one, we watched three sea lions play or were they fishing for breakfast as the day awoke.  We heard them barking wondering what they had to say as both Eric & I stayed laying awake from pre-dawn until those sunny rays cascaded across the bay illuminating the sky, our first day we witnessed clouds lofting along the horizon adding to the grandeur of this simple place.

Our fishing trip complete we needed to pack up all of our gear but first one last stroll I made along the desolate beach.  I was hunting for something particular, having seen broken pieces on an earlier stroll completely alone.  

My footsteps the only trace of human in the sand, well except for this one momentary moment of angst when I saw a glint in the sand. Immediately, I knew what it was and was filled with sadness as it could have killed by mistakenly ingesting thinking it was a jellyfish.

With the trash of the mylar balloon removed my path to choose freely between grains of time I wandered into the lapping water to check out my finds but choosing to continue my quest I forged on letting my toes sink as the weight of the world is heavy I deny its return … if for only a spell longer with no connectivity here vastly remote it was a splendid treat devoid of all the lies unfolding & complete nonsense #RESIST

Alas, I decided it was time to turn back. My path winding freely on the beach that just recently let go of the tide.  There it was staring up at me. I know in my heart it was awaiting this gals stride, I just need to listen to the quiet and follow its guide.

Nothing special, that's me, but with an open heart I remain against the echoes of ongoing angst.
A testament is inner strength while facing chants telling us we're wrong.
Maturity doesn't come with age but those characteristics you emulate.

Inaction isn't the opposite in this race as he essentially tries to erase.

With purpose I write prose as this year of the snake unfolds.
Skin translucent but yet many are mesmerized by its false charm.
This invasive species is infecting society across our lands.

Calm I remain, it's a strategy, unrattled I regulate my breathing.
My devotion guides me towards a sanctuary that harbors unquestioned love.
Pathways are disappearing so I invite you to remain vigilant.

Sacred spaces we'll never yield, to preserve and to protect.
With every ounce of my being I'll step forward and never surrender.
We hold the power even when it appears to be revoked.

The joys of life still remain while we #RESIST this ugly reign.
My words aren't mightier than the proverbial sword but my hope is they aid.
Weave into your day harmony sifting out that which makes one's heart dark.

Promote what you love instead of bashing those of unfounded hate.
That ugliness they've created doesn't kill the beauty within each of us.
Vibrate calmness as each day announces your awake.

Energy flows in everything, use it to project your voice as we collectively state this isn’t right.
Dreams of a different landscape are now showing based on a horror film we're experiencing.
Eyes wide open as we fight this weak feeble conniving soulless hollow shell of a human.

Sequels are never as good and this one was destined to be worse.
The theatre is full of sheep as we outwardly weep.
Tickets were sold well in advance laced with lies, hatred, criminals that deserve to reap what they've sown.

The power of lies is simple, tell it again and again and again.
Resistance isn't hard but you must be willing to make a stand.
Understand the phrase for the greater good and do unto others, how is that misunderstood?

Unshaken, no I'm not, but I hold onto hope that this too shall pass.
My fear is the destruction in the quake of that friggin' pen.
Etched across paper is that bumbling name that unravels history and unleash havoc.

Confusion, I’m not, but WTF how is this happening.
We are not meant to be silent as we reflect on this journey.
The future is now filled with challenges we face.

Evolution is a testament, I honor the past and the present.
Observe and remember who you are while we ride this storm.
Winds howl threatening to destroy we must remain united against this front.

Swirling, spiraling, stay acutely aware of wolfs praying on integrity like it never existed.
Earth trembles but we won’t let our light be extinguished.
Constant is that annoying noise that lacks empathy and exudes only chaos.

The world needs uncaged courage as we reclaim our space.
Embody honor unapologetically.
Together we’ll take back peace and compassion.

Destruction of values, of which they have none, despair will be temporary although it sucks where were here.
Find your voice, that’s how they win by silencing us with fear.
Show them peacefully by spreading love, condemn their four letter word “hate”.

When I’m president, a dreamers dream of a better being, I’d pick a cabinet that upholds honesty and integrity.
Pure is my prose riddled with only one goal.
To tear down walls, remove barriers, instill equality.

Tempting as it may be don’t to fold and give in dig deep into your resiliency.
Dark as it may seem from within us is the guiding light.
With confidence know that we aren’t powerless.

#RESIST temptations allowing them to steal your worth.
We’ve come so far against what wasn’t easy to fall back leaving us queasy.
Breathe deeply in with me and remember that light comes from within.

Together, as our boundaries are tested, recommit to always choosing with your conscious.
History cannot be erased as much as they try, we won’t let it if we collectively #RESIST.
Beyond the words I composed in this prose are each of you, the reader, I lovingly encircle in light and deliver glimmers of shimmering hope.

Back when I originally watched this movie I was running ALOT!  

Watching & listening to stories like this gave me drive & hope.  Stories like this infused my inner runners soul.  Cross-country was where my first runs began, all the way back in elementary school.  

This story is about more than just physical prowess drives the teens to succeed but reaches into their life; their strong family ties, growing up poor, an incredible work ethic, life’s struggles, overcoming adversity & commitment.

This all plays a factor in forging novice runners into champions while it pulls on your heartstrings.
